DAN Health Resources (Health & Diving Reference Library)
by Divers Alert Network medical and research staff · Divers Alert Network (DAN)
Divers Alert Network's free health and safety library: articles on diseases and conditions, reference books on decompression sickness, ears and equalization, and hazardous marine life injuries, plus guidelines on flying after diving, Smart Guides and quizzes. This is the best free reference on diving health, written by the organization that treats and studies diving injuries. It covers the physiology and marine-life injury parts of the topic note and is useful at every certification level.

Deco for Divers: A Diver's Guide to Decompression Theory and Physiology (2nd Edition)
Mark Powell's explanation of decompression theory for divers who want more than the tables. Covers gas uptake, Haldane and bubble models, gradient factors, deep stops, nitrox and mixed gas, and what dive computers actually calculate. It is the usual recommendation for understanding what a dive computer is doing.
Scuba Diving (5th Edition)
An agency-neutral beginner textbook by former PADI and NAUI training director Dennis Graver. Covers diving science and gas laws, physical adjustments underwater, equipment, aquatic environments, core skills, dive planning and further diving opportunities. A good beginner book to read alongside an in-person Open Water course.
NOAA Diving Manual (6th Edition)
NOAA's 800-page reference for scientific and working divers, edited by Greg McFall, John Heine and Jeffrey Bozanic. Covers diving physics and physiology, equipment, dive planning, nitrox tables, rebreathers, polluted-water diving and hazardous marine life. This is the civilian counterpart to the Navy manual, written for scientific and recreational-style diving. It is stronger on equipment, dive planning and the marine environment.
U.S. Navy Diving Manual (Revision 7, Change A)
This is the source that recreational training material draws its gas laws, physiology and decompression theory from. The Navy's official five-volume diving manual, free to download as PDF or ePub from NAVSEA. Volume 1 covers diving physics, physiology and policy; later volumes cover air decompression tables, mixed gas, rebreathers and diving medicine.
