Designing for Growth: A Design Thinking Tool Kit for Managers

Two Darden faculty organise design thinking around four questions — what is, what if, what wows, what works — with ten tools including journey mapping, concept development and assumption testing, aimed at people who must justify design work against business constraints. Bridges the gap this topic otherwise has: the design studio material assumes a designer's context, while a founder must connect empathy work to a growth hypothesis and a testable business assumption. Liedtka's four-question structure and explicit assumption-testing step do that, and the underlying research is published rather than anecdotal.

Frame Innovation: Create New Thinking by Design

Dorst, professor of design innovation at UTS, argues expert designers create value by reframing problems rather than following a five-step recipe. Sets out a nine-step frame-creation process, illustrated through case studies on retail layout, nightlife districts and staffing agencies. The honest critique of design thinking is that the process is a ritual without the underlying reasoning. Dorst supplies that reasoning: why the problem statement itself is the real design object, and how to generate alternative frames systematically.

Introduction to Human-Centered Design

A free seven-week self-paced course built with IDEO.org. Participants choose a real design challenge, run field interviews, cluster observations into insights, then build and test prototypes with actual users, submitting deliverables at each of the four phases. Design thinking is only learned by talking to real users, and reading a method deck does not force that. This is the only free, structured programme that makes the learner actually leave the desk, interview strangers, and put a prototype in front of them.
