Media Effects
Potter organizes decades of scattered research into a framework of media influences on beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and behaviour, distinguishing immediate from long-term effects. Readers gain a way to evaluate effects claims rather than accept them.
Understanding Media
McLuhan's 1964 argument that a medium's form, not its content, reshapes perception and society, developed through hot and cool media and short chapters on print, radio, television. Foundational and deliberately aphoristic rather than empirical.
The Media Equation
Reports experiments showing people treat computers and television as social actors, applying politeness and personality expectations to machines. Explains the psychological basis behind interface design choices in voice assistants and conversational systems.
Mass Communication
Survey textbook tracing communication theory from mass society and limited effects through cultural studies and framing, with the historical context of each school. Prepares students to compare paradigms and situate contemporary media research.
