### 1. Night

**Author:** Elie Wiesel

Wiesel's account of deportation from Sighet at fifteen, of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, and of his father's death weeks before liberation. This 2006 edition is Marion Wiesel's translation, with a preface by the author.
Wiesel writes as a religious adolescent losing his father and his faith, Levi as an adult scientist observing a system. Night is also the shorter and more approachable entry point.

### 2. Survival in Auschwitz (If This Is a Man)

**Author:** Primo Levi

The indispensable first-hand account, and the one most often named by historians themselves. Levi's chemist's detachment makes it a work of observation as much as memory. Levi, a chemist deported from Turin in 1944, recorded his ten months in Auschwitz III-Monowitz in restrained, analytical prose. Published in Italy in 1947, it is the foundational text on what the camp system did to human beings.

### 3. The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945

**Author:** Saul Friedlander

The definitive full narrative of the extermination years, and the book that resolved the long methodological split between perpetrator history and victim testimony. Friedlander's Pulitzer-winning second volume interleaves German policy, the responses of surrounding societies, and the diaries and letters of victims into one chronological narrative, so that decisions and their consequences appear on the same page.

### 4. Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland

**Author:** Christopher R. Browning

The most assigned Holocaust monograph in the English-speaking academy and the anchor of the perpetrator-history debate. Browning reconstructs from postwar interrogation records how a unit of middle-aged German policemen, neither ideologues nor career SS, came to shoot tens of thousands of Jews in Poland. The revised edition adds an afterword responding to later critics.

### 5. Why? Explaining the Holocaust

**Author:** Peter Hayes

The best single-volume orientation for someone who has read the encyclopedia entries and now wants to know how historians actually argue. Its question-driven structure directly confronts the misconceptions a newcomer arrives with. Hayes organises decades of scholarship around eight questions: why the Jews, why the Germans, why murder, why so fast, why so little resistance or outside help, and what the legacies are. Each chapter weighs competing historical explanations.

### 6. The Periodic Table

**Author:** Primo Levi

Primo Levi's collection of autobiographical stories, each named after a chemical element, moving from his youth and chemistry training in Fascist Italy through the Holocaust to postwar industrial work, showing how scientific thinking shaped his moral and literary vision.
