### 3. The History of Science Fiction (2nd edition)

**Author:** Adam Roberts

The most complete single-author scholarly history of the genre in English. Traces science fiction from classical and early-modern precursors through the pulps, the Golden Age, the New Wave and after, arguing the genre emerges from post-Reformation conflict over the cosmos. Heavily referenced and deliberately argumentative rather than neutral survey.

### 4. The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction

**Author:** Edward James, Farah Mendlesohn (editors)

The best single starting text for studying rather than merely reading SF: it teaches the critical approaches and the historical periodisation at once, and its Further Reading apparatus routes a learner onward. Essays by scholars and novelists in three parts: the genre's history, critical approaches including feminist and postmodern readings, and sub-genres and themes. Won the Hugo Award for Best Related Book and works as the standard undergraduate entry point.
