# Fiber Bundles

Fiber bundles are topological spaces that locally look like product spaces but may have complex global structures. Learners will understand how to analyze these spaces using transition functions, connection theory, and associated vector bundles.

## Where to start

Start with Ralph L. Cohen's The Topology of Fiber Bundles, free Stanford graduate lecture notes that build bundles from clutching functions and structure groups with full proofs. If you only use one resource, make it Dale Husemöller's Fibre Bundles, a paid Springer graduate text and the modern working reference. For vector bundles and characteristic classes, continue with Allen Hatcher's free Vector Bundles and K-Theory.

## Books

### 1. Fibre Bundles (Graduate Texts in Mathematics 20)

**Author:** Dale Husemöller

Where Steenrod is the classical source, Husemöller is the modern working reference: the book that treats associated bundles and gauge groups at length, which the topic note calls out directly. Graduate Texts in Mathematics volume covering bundle basics, homotopy classification, principal and associated bundles, K-theory, and, added in the third edition, the gauge group of a bundle and differential forms representing characteristic classes of complex vector bundles.

**Tags:** fiber-bundles, algebraic-topology, k-theory, characteristic-classes, vector-bundles

### 2. The Topology of Fibre Bundles (PMS-14)

**Author:** Norman Steenrod

The 1951 monograph that first organized fibre bundle theory systematically, constructing bundles from coordinate transformations and structure groups, then applying homotopy and cohomology theory to bundle classification, obstruction theory, and characteristic classes. Reissued by Princeton, 224 pages.

### 3. Vector Bundles and K-Theory

**Author:** Allen Hatcher

Hatcher's free in-progress book, roughly 120 pages posted, covering vector bundles, topological K-theory and Bott periodicity, Adams' theorem on the Hopf invariant, division algebras, sphere parallelizability, and Stiefel-Whitney, Chern, Euler and Pontryagin classes. Directly serves the associated-vector-bundles half of the topic note, from an author whose exposition is the field's default recommendation.

### 4. The Topology of Fiber Bundles: Lecture Notes

**Author:** Ralph L. Cohen

Stanford graduate lecture notes, 171 pages, developing locally trivial fibrations through clutching functions and structure groups, then principal bundles, pullbacks, connections and curvature, classifying spaces, characteristic classes, and the Leray-Serre spectral sequence.
Chapter 1 builds bundles explicitly from transition/clutching functions and structure groups, section 2.5 does connections and curvature, chapter 2 does universal bundles and classifying spaces. Book-length with full proofs, free.
